I posted last week about those miscreants (that’s our public ‘safe for work’ description) posting spam on BlogEngine.NET sites and linked to Chris Blankenship’s Comment Blacklist Extension for BE.NET.
Well. Those ‘miscreants’ are back!
BlogEngine.NET
Thanks to Clarence Klopfstein at OCDProgrammer he pointed us to a more robust solution called Commentor from RTUR.NET. This spam solution integrates with Anti-Spam services from Waegis and Akismet.
Works by intercepting a comment before its published on your Blog/Forum and checks the content and author against one of the above Anti-Spam services. If the Comment is considered OK, its published. If its considered spam, its held pending approval or deletion.
Installation and setup for BlogEngine,NET is a 2 minute job:
- Copy the contents of the ZIP into your site. The zip file is organized with folder content to match site layout; copy-paste the folders App_Code, Bin, User controls to the root of your site and overwrite folders. Nice.
- Login to your site, click Extensions, click Edit for Commentor.
- Sign-up to one of these Anti-Spam services Waegis and/or Akismet. You need to obtain an application key (see Usage Agreement below) from either of these providers.
- Enter your site URL and Application Key, click Save. Done!
Waegis and CommunityServer
One of the co-authors of Waegis is prolific .NET programmer, author and CommunityServer guru Keyvan Nayyeri. Therefore, quel surprise, Waegis provides a range of CommunityServer and Graffiti CMS plug-ins.
We’ll be taking a look at the CommunityServer Waegis module soon, although (famous last words) we don’t seem to have many instances of spam on the CS sites we manage.
Check out the Waegis Downloads here.
Akismit and Blogs/Forums
Akismet also provide a range of libraries to support different Blog/Forum platforms. This includes support for the popular forums platforms Drupal, phpBB and Joomla.
Check out all the Akismet libraries and plug-ins here.
Usage Agreement
- Waegis is free irrespective of the type of home, business or enterprise use. Supports (currently) a maximum of 5 site/application API keys.
- Akismet is free for non-profit use. Otherwise approx $5.00 per month for a Professional Blogger (using paid ads) or $50.00 per month for a Commercial/Enterprise Venture.
