BlogEngine.NET with Customer Film Database

17. December 2008

Ambay Software have just completed development of an exciting client project integrating BlogEngine.NET with a bespoke Film Database for SmokeScreeners.org

SmokeScreeners.org are funded by the Quit Doc Research and Education Foundation (QDREF.ORG). They promote a tobacco awareness and prevention program highlighting the use of cigarettes and smoking within Box Office films. This is helping children and young-adults to both understand and challenge the subliminal impact of smoking in films.

A typical review by QDOrg: Disney's AladdinDisney's Aladdin

Aladdin released by Walt Disney Studios in 1992 includes a number of smoking incidents including where the Genie blows a heart-shaped smoke-ring. This film was first reviewed on 11/5/2007 by QDOrg...

... a film that your children and grandchildren will probably have watched shows smoking in a "positive" way. That is not good for our kids.

Design Brief

The QDORG outline specification was to take an existing manual scoring process and automate this so that film-data could be quickly added, updated, with graphic or video media included within their film discussion. The application design allows educators, health professionals and counsellors to contribute to Film Reviews. SmokeScreeners' aim is to cover and review every single US Box Office film in 2009 while extending its education program to the UK and mainland Europe.

BE.NET Integration

The solution had to provide easy-to-use tools to both input new film data and for the posting of supporting material for the film review. Using BlogEngine.NET as the underlying "Blog" platform meant that adding Films Posters, Movie Star photos and multimedia including YouTube links. This provides simple editing tools which can be passed to new Film Reviewers within easy-to-follow instructions.

The Film Database includes a Blog Reference (GUID) allowing the abstract from a Blog Entry to be dynamically displayed under the film drop-down. This draws the reader into the discussion about the film, pulling them to the Film Entry. Thereby a reader can add any comments they have about the film and its depiction of smoking. This provides the integration link between Film Database and the Film Blog Post.
